Brother Martin quarterback John-Paul Pierce passed for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns – in the first half – to lead the Crusaders to a 58-13 non-district win Friday night at Sulphur.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Brother Martin as the Crusaders improved to 3-3. Sulphur dropped its second game in a row to fall to 4-2.
An early field goal gave Brother Martin a 3-0 edge before the Golden Tornados grabbed the lead on a 50-yard run by J’Cobi Skinner.
One play after Brady Faust returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards, Pierce hooked up with Jeremy Swilling on a 48-yard touchdown to put Brother Martin back on top.
Faust came up with Brother Martin’s next score when he hauled in a 14-yard pass from Pierce.
A 45-yard touchdown pass from Pierce to Pattre’en Hughes and a 6-yard touchdown run by Bruce Jordan-Swilling gave Brother Martin a 30-6 lead.
The Golden Tornados made it 30-13 at halftime on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Byron Walker to John Wayne Bourgeois, but Sulphur would not score the remainder of the game.
A 26-yar run by Pierce early in the second quarter extended Brother Martin’s lead even more. The Brother Martin quarterback ended up hitting on 11 of 12 passes in the game for 272 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 70 yards and another score.
Sulphur moved to the Brother Martin 2-yard line but Walker tossed an interception in the end zone to end the Golden’ Tornados’ final threat of the game.
