John Curtis baseball player Austin Haensel will continue his career at Southern University in 2017. Heading into his senior season at Curtis, Haensel signed with the Jaguars today in a ceremony in the school atrium.
A pitcher/utility player, Haensel is expected to be the staff ace for Coach Jeff Curtis’s team next spring, when the Patriots defend their first-ever Catholic League title. He was 4-0 on the mound last year and added two saves, striking out 26 batters in 22 innings.
Haensel is a three-pitch pitcher whose fastball sits in the mid-80's.
He is also batted .300 last spring as a starting utility player (both infield and outfield) who provides flexibility to the lineup because of his ability to play a variety of positions. Haensel is a product of the Patriot baseball program after having played on the elementary, junior high and varsity teams at John Curtis.
