Holy Cross built a 23-point halftime lead and coasted to a 33-7 victory over Shaw in the Catholic League opener on Saturday night at Tad Gormley Stadium.

Defense provided the first score for Holy Cross when defensive end Kenneth Carradine hauled in a mid-air fumble and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown.

A 71-yard touchdown run by Ashton Smith, who rushed for 172 yards, extended the Tigers’ lead to 14-0. A pair of Nolan Heitmeier field goal gave Holy Cross a 20-0 lead.

Heitmeier’s first field goal was set up by a 53-yard return of a Wallace Lucas fumble by Holy Cross’ Josh Gillard.

After Heitmeier’s second field late in the first half, the Tigers (2-2 overall, 1-0 in District 9-5A) successfully pulled off an onside kick. That led to Heitmeier’s third field goal of the game to give Holy Cross its 23-0 halftime lead.

A 56-yard touchdown run by Landon Bates in the third quarter made it 30-0.

Heitmeier kicked a 36-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for Holy Cross.

The Eagles (0-4 overall, 0-1 in district) avoided the shutout on a 2-yard run by Lucas. Pete Taylor, Shaw’s starting quarterback, missed the game with an injury.
