A 30-yard field goal by St. Paul’s Austin Means at the start of overtime held up as the Wolves handed Jesuit a 13-10 loss Friday in Covington.

St. Paul’s (1-1) got the ball first in overtime and the Wolves lost 3 yards on the opening play of the possession before tossing a pair of incomplete passes. Means’ field goal gave St. Paul’s a three-point edge.

Jesuit running back Connor Prouet got the ball for the first two plays of the Blue Jays’ possession, gaining a total of 2 yards. Alex Watermeier’s pass in the end zone on third down was intercepted.

Jesuit (1-1) had a chance to win the game in regulation.

Facing fourth down from its own 35-yard line with seven second remaining, the Wolves attempted to pick up the first down. St. Paul’s quarterback Johntae McDowell was called for intentional grounding, handing the ball to Jesuit at the Wolves’ 23-yard line with one second left in regulation. Jack Chanove’s 40-yard field goal attempt for Jesuit came up short, sending the game into overtime.

The first points in the low-scoring affair came less than a minute into the second quarter on a 58-yard touchdown pass by Watermeier for a 7-0 Jesuit lead.

St. Paul’s tied the game at halftime on an 8-yard run by Korey Williamson with 45 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the teams exchanged field goals in the fourth quarter.

Chanove connected on a 28-yard field goal with less than nine minutes left in regulation to put the Blue Jays on top by three points.

The Wolves countered three minutes later on a 37-yard field goal by Means that would ultimately send the game into overtime.
