McDonogh 35 defensive back Brad Stewart intercepted two passes, including one in the end zone with less than two minutes left in the game to preserve the Roneagles’ 26-19 victory over St. Augustine on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Trailing by a touchdown, the Purple Knights marched to the Roneagles’ 8-yard line before Stewart intercepted St. Augustine quarterback Justice McCoy to ensure the triumph. Earlier in the game, Stewart returned an interception for a touchdown.
An interception helped to give St. Augustine (0-1) the early lead when Donniel Ward-Magee of the Purple Knights picked off a LiJohn Howard pass and raced 67 yards for a touchdown.
McDonogh 35 (1-0) countered on its next possession on a 1-yard run by Howard. The score was sent up by Lawrence Keys’ kickoff return to the St. Aug 39-yard line.
Stewart also contributed offensively, hauling in a 30-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the first half to give the Roneagles a 20-13 halftime lead.
Eddie Tillman amassed slightly less than 150 yards for McDonogh 35.
McCoy passed for slightly less than 200 yards while St. Augustine receiver Takulve Williams topped 100 yards in receptions. Perre Barbarin topped the century mark in rushing for the Purple Knights.
