St. Augustine built a lead of 20-0 but had to hold off a late Holy Cross rally for a 34-31 Catholic League victory over the Tigers on Friday at Zephyr Field.

Trailing 34-17, Holy Cross quarterback Chandler Fields tossed touchdown passes of 24 yards to Albion Ford and 25 yards to Kym Wimberly. Wimberly’s catch came with 46 seconds to dray the Tigers to within three points.

Holy Cross was unable to recover an onside kick and St. Aug was able to run out the clock for the 34-31 District 9-5A win.

The Purple Knights (5-4 overall, 4-1 in district) scored on their opening possession of the game on a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justice McCoy to Joseph Walker.

St. Augustine defensive back Jamaal Scott returned an errant Fields throw for a touchdown and a 13-0 Purple Knights advantage.

The Purple Knights made it 20-0 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half on a 21-yard Perre Barbarin run.

Holy Cross (2-7 overall, 1-5 in district) managed to trim the deficit to 10 points at halftime with two late scores in the second quarter.

Barbarin, who ran for 84 yards, rushed for a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to extend St. Augustine’s lead before the Tigers mounted their late rally attempt that fell three points short.
