Rummel jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead on its way to a 42-7 victory over Shaw in the Raiders’ Catholic League opener Saturday at Hoss Memtas Stadium.
The Raiders (4-0 overall, 1-0 in District 9-5A) got off to a quick start thanks to Andre Danove. The Rummel defense back returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown, giving the Raiders a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the contest over Shaw (0-5 overall, 0-2 in district).
A 1-yard quarterback sneak by Jacob Palma to cap a 69-yard drive extended Rummel’s lead to 14-0 with slightly more than four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Special teams helped to set up Rummel’s final score of the opening quarter.
A partially-block punt gave the Raiders the ball at the Shaw 43-yard line. A 41-yard pass from Palma to Cole Young brought the ball down to the 1-yard line. After a Rummel penalty, Dwan Trufant scored from 6 yards out for a 21-0 Raiders lead.
An 18-yard touchdown run by receiver Jermie Walker on a reverse with less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter gave Rummel a 28-0 lead at halftime.
