Ashton Smith accounted for more than 200 yards as Holy Cross to help the Tigers to a 31-22 victory Friday night at Chalmette.
Smith ran for 170 yards while rushing for a touchdown and also scoring on a pass reception.
A low-scoring first half saw each team score a second-quarter touchdown for a 7-7 tie at halftime.
Smith capped a 99-yard drive on a 6-yard run to give Holy Cross (1-2) a 7-0 lead with only 2:43 left before halftime.
Chalmette (2-1) managed to tie the game at halftime on a 3-yard run by quarterback Jason Roper.
Trailing 10-7, Holy Cross quarterback Glenn Kramer tossed third-quarter touchdown passes to Smith and Kym Wimberly to put the Tigers on top 21-10.
Kramer, a converted defensive back, was making his first start at quarterback in place of injured Chander Fields, who has a broken collarbone.
Special teams provided the next score for Holy Cross when Tiger defensive lineman Kenneth Carradine blocked a field-goal attempt by Chalmette’s Douglas Saavedra that was scooped up and returned 61 yards for a touchdown by defensive back Laiton Johnson.
Roper and running back Michaund Blaise each had rushing touchdowns for the Owls in the second half.
