File photosCoach Al Jones saw his St. Augustine Purple Knights let a 20-7 lead slip away in a 27-7 loss to Scotlandville that eliminated St. Aug from the Division I playoffs.

A defensive stop with St. Augustine leading by 13 points in the fourth quarter looked to have the Purple Knights well on their way to the Division I semifinals.

The Purple Knights, however, discovered the hard way that looks can be truly deceiving.

Leading 20-7, the Purple Knights stopped Scotlandville on fourth-and-goal early in the fourth quarter.

Three plays into St. Augustine’s next possession, the Purple Knights’ fortunes began to change. Scotlandville’s Torrianto Sims intercepted a Justice McCoy pass, giving the Hornets the ball at the St. Aug 8-yard line.

Scotlandville quarterback Levi Lewis ran in for a touchdown on the very next play, allowing the Hornets to close the gap to 20-14 with 10:43 left in the game.

St. Augustine marched to the Scotlandville 16-yard line before giving up the ball on downs. Moments later, Scotlandville’s Keith Settle broke loose on a 79-yard scamper. A blocked extra point left the game tied 20-20.

Again, the Purple Knights moved into Scotlandville territory. This time, a McCoy pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage, with Marcus Harris coming up with the interception to give the ball to the Hornets at their own 15-yard line with slightly more than three minutes remaining in the game.

Several plays later, Lewis tossed to Vernon Powell. Powell broke a couple of tackles on his way to a 40-yard touchdown with 57 seconds remaining to give Scotlandville a 27-20 triumph.

The quarterfinal loss ended St. Augustine’s season at 7-5. The win over St. Aug, the No. 7 seed, advanced second-seeded Scotlandville to the semifinals against Brother Martin. Brother Martin, the No. 6 seed, advanced with a 28-0 win over third-seeded Catholic of Baton Rouge.

St. Augustine lost to Scotlandville (11-0) for the second time this year. Earlier in the season, the Purple Knight fell 36-20 to the Hornets.

The first half ended in a 7-7 tie as each team scored late in the second quarter.

A 2-yard run by Scotlandville’s Trenton Charles gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead. Two plays following a 45-yard pass from McCoy to Takulve Williams, Williams scored on a 4-yard run to tie the game.

The Purple Knights built their 20-7 lead going into the fourth quarter on a 22-yard pass from McCoy to Settle and a 3-yard run by Perre Barbarin.
