St. Augustine was simply unable to stop Keytoan Thompson.
The Landry-Walker quarterback rushed for three touchdowns and passed for an additional three scores in the Charging Buccaneers’ 42-20 victory Friday night at Behrman Stadium.
Landry-Walker (1-2) was in need of most of Thompson’s touchdowns as the game between the two previously-winless teams was close going into the fourth quarter.
A 4-yard touchdown pass by St. Augustine quarterback Justice McCoy with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter kept the Purple Knights (0-3) in the game as they closed to within 29-20.
McCoy’s touchdown, however, would prove to be the final scoring for St. Aug.
Thompson hooked up with Tevin Bush on a 56-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to stretch the Charging Buccaneers’ lead to 35-20. The Landry-Walker quarterback rounded out the scoring with a 56-yard run with less than five minutes remaining in the contest.
The Charging Buccaneers only held a 14-6 halftime lead.
Thompson’s first touchdown came on a 32-yard run in the middle of the opening quarter for a 6-0 edge.
St. Augustine countered when McCoy tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Keith Settle to the game.
A 14-yard pass from Thompson to Devonta Jason and a two-point conversion pass to Michael Rhen gave Landry-Walker a 14-6 lead that would hold up through halftime.
