A 2-yard run by West Jefferson quarterback Zaayir Williams with less than a minute remaining rallied the Buccaneers to a 25-20 triumph over winless Shaw on Friday night at Hoss Memtas Stadium.
Williams’ touchdown capped a string of 19-straight points for the Buccaneers.
The Buccaneers’ quarterback passed for 161 yards and rushed for 119 to lead West Jefferson (2-1) to the win.
Shaw took what seemed like a commanding 20-6 lead in the third quarter on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Pete Taylor to Ta’hji Thomas before the Buccaneers rallied.
A 58-yard touchdown run by West Jefferson’s DeJaunte Murry and a 15-yard scamper by Lorenzo Penn inched the Buccaneers to within a point of Shaw at 20-19.
Tyruss Gayden’s fumble recovery set up West Jefferson’s winning touchdown. One play after a 13-yard pass from Williams to Penn, Williams scored on a 2-yard run to drop Shaw to 0-3 on the season.
Shaw, which was held to 50 yards rushing, came up with the game’s initial score when Thomas hauled in the first of his three touchdown receptions from Williams. Thomas’ 38-yard touchdown gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
West Jefferson countered on a 15-yard run by Williams to tie the game 6-6.
Taylor hooked up with Thomas on a 6-yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 13-7 halftime lead.
