Brother Martin running back Bruce Jordan-Swilling failed to top 100 yards rushing for the first time this season but Crusaders quarterback John-Paul Pierce was more than able to pick up the slack.
Pierce passed for 179 yards and four touchdowns to help pace Brother Martin past Holy Cross 42-10 in Catholic League action Friday night at Zephyr Field.
Jordan-Swilling rushed for 66 yards, with only one carry in the second half, and came up a bit short in his quest toward reaching the 1,000-yard mark. The Brother Martin running back went into the game needing 120 yards to reach the milestone.
Pierce hit Pat Hughes with a 4-yard touchdown pass with less than four minutes remaining in the first quarter to give the Crusaders a 7-0 lead.
Jordan-Swilling followed the first of his two rushing touchdowns, scoring on a 2-yard run with less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter for a 14-0 Brother Martin advantage.
Holy Cross (2-5 overall, 1-3 in District 9-5A) mounted a drive in the second quarter, advancing 71 yards but eventually had to settle on a 22-yard Nolan Heitmeier field goal to make it 14-3.
The Crusaders (4-3 overall, 1-2 in district) began to distance themselves with two touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half.
Jordan-Swilling’s second touchdown run, this one from 23 yards out, extended the Brother Martin lead to 21-3.
A 55-yard pass from Pierce to Jeremy Singleton with 2:26 left before halftime gave the Crusaders a 28-3 lead at the break.
Singleton and Pierce hooked up again early in the third quarter as 44-yard strike extended Brother Martin’s lead to 35-3.
Brother Martin closed out its scoring later in the third quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Pierce to Erick Lassair.
The Tigers’ only touchdown came with 10 seconds left in the contest on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Chandler Fields to Landen Bates for the 42-10 final.
