St. Augustine quarterback Justice McCoy accounted for four touchdowns in the Purple Knights’ 27-15 triumph over Byrd in the opening round of the Division I playoffs Friday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
The Purple Knights, the No. 7 seed, advanced to take on Scotlandville. The Hornets, the No. 2 seed, had an opening-round bye. Byrd ended its season 4-7.
St. Augustine, 7-4, will face Scotlandville in a rematch. The Purple Knights lost to the Hornets 36-20 in Week 2 of the regular season as part of a 0-3 start for St. Aug.
A 14-yard run by McCoy, the first of his three rushing touchdowns in the game, capped a 93-yard drive to give St. Aug the early lead.
Byrd cut into the deficit on a 27-yard field goal by Ben Smith.
Each team turned the ball over on downs after long drives before McCoy hooked up with Takulve Williams on a 41-yard touchdown pass to give the Purple Knights a 13-3 halftime lead.
The Yellow Jackets appeared poised to get back in the game with another long drive in the third quarter, but like in the first half, Byrd came away with no points when the drive eventually stalled.
St. Augustine, meanwhile, extended its lead on the opening play of the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by McCoy.
Byrd made it 21-9 when Carson Dunn connected with Javien Wilson on a 50-yard touchdown pass. The Yellow Jackets appeared to get the ball back by recovering an onside kick, but Byrd was forced to re-kick because of a penalty.
McCoy followed with another touchdown run from a yard out to extend St. Augustine’s lead.
Dunn tossed another 50-yard scoring pass, this time to Christian Gulledge but that was as close as Byrd would get.
