St. Augustine’s Garland LaFrance put the game against visiting Thibodaux into his own hands early in the non-district encounter Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
The Purple Knights running back recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff to set up a touchdown and scored on a pair of runs to stake St. Augustine to a 21-0 lead on its way to a 38-20 victory over the Tigers.
Two plays after LaFrance’s fumble recovery, Justice McCoy scored on a 1-yard run to give the Purple Knights (4-4) a quick 7-0 edge less 30 seconds into the game.
LaFrance scored on a 13-yard run with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. A 26-yard run by LaFrance less than a minute into the second quarter extended the St. Aug lead to 21-0.
Thibodaux (6-2) put itself back in the game by halftime with two touchdowns late in the second quarter.
A 60-yard pass from Tigers quarterback Saul Barrilleaux to Rochan Washington got Thibodaux on the board at 21-7 with 4:44 remaining in the second quarter.
Dwayne Coleman returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown with 25 seconds left before halftime to pull Thibodaux to within 21-14 at the break.
St. Augustine used up almost five minutes on the opening drive of the second half before McCoy scored on a 19-yard run to extend the Purple Knights’ lead to 28-14. The Purple Knights added a field goal later in the third quarter to push their advantage to 31-14.
Shemar Lawson scored on a 4-yard run with five seconds left in the third quarter to make it 31-20 before St. Aug closed out the scoring on a 56-yard run by Jermance Webb for the 38-20 final.
